Accent Modification and Refinement
Sarah Hoefflin
The goal of accent modification, or accent reduction, is to change the sounds and melody of your English so that you can express yourself more clearly and be understood more easily. If you are a non-native speaker of English and find that people concentrate more on how you are speaking than what you are saying, accent modification can help.
Accent modification is for non-native speakers of English who have a genuine need to speak more clearly in the workplace in order to pursue a successful career. Accent modification training with a speech-language pathologist (SLP) offers a distinct and important enhancement to traditional classes: an SLP has a master's degree and is uniquely educated to analyze the sounds of speech and to train clients to modify their speech patterns.

Accent training focuses on the sounds and melody of American English. In an individualized course, your speech will be evaluated thoroughly and analyzed in detail to determine goals that are unique to you. The trainer will set up a schedule that addresses your accent needs, and meetings will focus specifically on the consonants, vowels and intonation patterns that will make your speech more easily understood.

An initial 20-hour module is recommended for most clients.
